LOVERS

Excerpt:

In my dream we’re dancing. It’s a party, but not one I was ever at with them. Everyone is here. Hayes, Connor, Bennett all wearing tuxes. Me, Camille, Sofia all wearing gowns. They are the gowns we found in the basement room that first night with Louise.

I stop dancing when I realize that. I’m partnered with Bennett for some reason, which is also confusing. So I look around, searching for Connor, then Hayes. Connor has Sofia pushed up against a wall, his hand hidden beneath the long flowing layers of her elaborate skirt. Her head is tilted upward, mouth slightly open. And he’s whispering something in her ear.

I’m jealous, but turned on. So I lead Bennett over to them and take my place next to Sofia against the wall. Someone is kissing me. Bennett, or Connor, or maybe Sofia—but then I realize it’s Hayes. His soft lips caressing the side of my neck. His soft words wrapping around the tender skin of my ear just like Connor’s words wrap around Sofia. “Do you like it?” he asks. “I want you to like it.”

“What are we doing?” I whisper back. “When did this become who we are?”

And Hayes says, “It’s not real, so don’t worry about it.”

But it feels real. Camille is kissing Bennett now, her body pressing up against mine. Her soft, full breasts are bare. Somehow she’s gotten herself naked. And in my dream I laugh at that. Because it’s so typical of Camille to just take off her clothes and be indiscreet.

And then we’re all naked. All twisted together in the sheets of some giant bed. Camille’s bed, I realize. Now we’re at her Christmas party. And there’s butterflies in the air. Clear-winged butterflies like the ones at Connor’s parents anniversary. Dozens of them. No, hundreds of them. Their soft wings flutter around my hot, feverish skin like a summer wind. Making a cool breeze that feels so good.

But it’s not the butterflies. It’s Connor, blowing air across my pussy as his tongue laps against my folds, looking for the sweet spot. And when he hits it, I buck my back.

But Bennett is there, whispering, “This is wrong. This is so fucking wrong.”

And I reply, “Shut up,” because I’m irritated that he’s ruining the feeling of Connor between my legs. “Just shut up.”

And then he and Camille are gone and I get this weird feeling that they’ve left us. They figured it out—this wrongness—and left us.

But Hayes is there, saying, “Shhh, they don’t know anything. Don’t worry.”

But I do worry. Because I want to know what they don’t know. And Hayes is the secret-keeper and he’s close now. So close. “What don’t they know?” I ask him.

But Connor steals the words from my mouth with a kiss and it’s too much. I forget about my questions and how none of this makes sense and say, “It’s just a dream.”

And Sofia is touching me now. She was always so careful when she touched me, afraid she might do it wrong. But I used to tell her, “There’s no wrong way.” And that always made her happy for a little bit.

Which makes me think about her sadness. And her books. Those books she writes. The dark, sexy stories that steal your life away for days, or months, or years. And I say, “When did you change?”

And she just looks at me with her sad, sad smile that’s on her face so often now, I’ve grown used to it. She says, “You know when.”

But I don’t. I don’t really remember anything except that tower. And the book I wrote. And those dresses down in the basement. Why were there dresses in the basement?

“Kiera?”

It makes no sense at all. Why that guy had dresses. Did he have a fetish?

“Kiera?”

But they weren’t dresses, were they? They were costumes.

“Kiera!”

I open my eyes to find Connor on top of me. Holy shit, this is real.

Taking Turns, Turning Back, His Turn -Turning #1, #2, #3 by J.A. Huss

REVIEW

WARNING!  Enter this series with extreme caution! High chance of getting burnt on the heat that comes out of these pages!

The Turning Series revolves around three men – Elias Bricman, Smith Baldwin and Quin Foster – who have been friends for a very long time and have, during that time, found that they enjoy sharing women. Not just sharing them but playing games with them…everything is a game. That is, until it is not.

Taking Turns finds theses men in a confusing situation when the woman they have spent the last three years with has vanished and someone else is in their place.  Chella believes she knows what she is letting herself in for.  She needs the pleasure and pain that these men can inflict on her.  Quin wants nothing to do with her, Bric doesn’t care either way, and Smith finds that he cannot stay away.   Something draws him to her but what secrets is she hiding?

Turning Back sees the return of Rochelle, the woman who broke Quin’s heart and left him in a world of pain for a year.  Why has she come back?  Smith wants her to leave  before she hurts his friend all over again, Quin relies on anger to get him through the time ahead, and Bric seems to know more than he is letting on.  With Smith no longer playing can Bric and Quin find a way to bring Rochelle back into the game?

His Turn is all about Bric. At a loose end he finds a new partner to play games with, Jordan Wells. Jordan introduces him to Nadia, who although is not anything like either Chella or Rochelle, she is more his type.  The only problem is that they both want the same thing – control! Are they all playing the same game or have each got their on set of rules?

I absolutely loved this series from start to finish.  I was a bit unsure, as I’m not overly into the BDSM Club scene books but having read numerous series by this author before I couldn’t not give it a try.  The club is not highly focused on, the stories are more about the main characters and the relationships they have and build together.  The subject of sex and sharing is very open within these books so, if that is not your thing or you are adverse to three/foursomes, then they may not be for you.

The build up of the characters is fantastic.  I’ll be honest, if I had read His Turn first I would not like Bric’s character at all.  However,  knowing his backstory and having seen the softer side to him in the previous books gave me knowledge of the character that explained why he did what he did. I think may favourite is Smith.  I can just picture him with his two rat dogs and the puppy, he really will make a great father if they ever have the chance 🙂

The end of this series leads nicely onto the next – Jordan’s Game – which I will starting in the New Year!

Synopsis

Taking Turns – I’ve never been afraid of the dark…but that doesn’t mean I wanted to live in it. And maybe everyone wants what they can’t have, but I should’ve thought it over before I accepted the key and unlocked the door to their forbidden world.  Number One is mostly silent. He watches me with them very carefully. His gaze never wanders. His interest never wanes.  Number Two is mostly gentle. But it’s the other side of him I like best. The wild side.  Number Three is mostly reserved.  He refuses to cross the line. Even when I beg.  It was carnal, it was sensual, and it was erotic. That’s it. That’s all it was supposed to be. A trip into the dark. A peek into the forbidden.  I just didn’t expect to like them. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33192096-taking-turns)

Turning Back – I lived in the dark for three years. My whole world revolved around the whims and happiness of three men. It was just a trip into the forbidden. A way out of a bad situation and forward into nothingness.  Quin, with his easy smile and charming good looks. He was always there for me… Until he wasn’t.  Smith, and his dispassionate attention. He was never there for me and he never regretted it.  Bric, the one who listened, but only to himself. Self-absorbed, self-obsessed, and self-serving. He was never the one I wanted.  And now he might be the only one I have left.  It was good while it lasted, I guess. But it could’ve been so much more. It could’ve been so much better.  And that’s why I’m turning back. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/33867511-turning-back)

His Turn – I look her body up and down as I circle her.
Mine?
I smile a devious, deviant, I’m gonna make you sorry you ever started playing this game with me smile.
And then I take her hand.
I lead her to the elevator.
We go up to my apartment.
I tie her wrists together with rope.
Raise her arms above her head.
And chain her to the ceiling.
It’s my turn. (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/34818548-his-turn)

The Triangle – Shape of Love #1 by J.A. Huss, Johnathan McClain

REVIEW

If there is one thing that can be said about a J A Huss novel/series it is, expect something unexpected.  That is exactly what you get with this book, unexpected twists, unexpected decisions, unexpected…everything!

Christine is not your average 24 year old.  She doesn’t work in an office, the man in her life isn’t her boss, and she most definitely isn’t doing ‘something boring’. But what exactly is it that she does do?  Christine has lost her memory and now a man is standing in front of her telling her to leave with him.

Danny has loved Christine for more years than he cares to remember.  When he found her, he promised to protect her and in doing so he hid his feelings and pushed her away.  Now she is back. One call from him and Danny comes running. Finding Christine the way she was, no memory of anything but him hurt more than he would say, but this is Christine. His to protect, his to love, and his from this point on.

Alec knew he could count on Danny to protect her, save her from whatever was happening, but what exactly was happening?  With Christine’s loss of memory it would take time to piece everything together but by then it may be too late.  Can three people really love, trust and respect each other and what happens when the triangle loses shape? Will it be able to put itself together again?

Absolutely engrossed in this story from page 1.  The tension between the characters, the trust and betrayal, the bits of Christine’s memory coming back to add even more intrigue to an already enthralling story just kept me turning page after page, and by the end there were still so many questions that needed answers…so many questions…

These are very interesting characters.  Christine is way older in her thoughts and actions than any 24 year old should be.  She knows what she wants and she is not afraid to go get it.  Danny is the calming influence, the decision maker, the ‘let’s think about this for a minute’ one, but once he makes that decision he goes full force into it.  And then there is Alec.  What can be said about Alec – rich, entitled, slightly delusional, a whole lot ‘who gives a fuck!’

The sex between these three is HOT! If MFM/MMF is not your cup of tea then don’t get this book cos, trust me on this, there is plenty of heat and sizzle when these three finally get it on!

Another fantastic start to a new series by the talented duo that is Julie Huss and Johnathan McClain.

Synopsis

They’re sworn enemies and I’m in the middle.
Both of them claimed me. Had me. Used me. Forgot me.
Except… I don’t remember any of it. I don’t even know who I am or why I’m in this cramped basement apartment with tinfoil covering the tiny windows when my bank account says I have over two million dollars.
I don’t know how I got the stitches on the back of my head, or the scar under my chin, or the ache in my shoulder—but I do know I probably deserved it.
I don’t know why there’s a shotgun in the closet, a sniper rifle under the floorboards, and a pistol under my pillow.
I don’t know why I stay.
I don’t know why I care.
I don’t know why I’m trying to put something back together when it was never whole to begin with.
Until I look at them.
Until they look at me.
Until I touch them.
Until they touch me.
And even though the memories don’t come back.
I know.
I know why I stay.

The Legacy of Falcon Ridge – The McLendon Family Saga #8 by D.L. Roan

REVIEW

This family has been with me for a long time now and I have followed everyone of them as they have embarked on their own life adventures. Seeing the whole family brought together for Dani and Clay’s wedding is just another step along the path that will never end because even when the author hangs up her pen I will still be carrying these wonderful people in my heart.

Every member of the family makes an appearance in this book along with some of the newer characters who I know we are going to be seeing a lot more of. Dani’s wedding is fast approaching and the effect this is having on the Dad’s is hilarious. Grey is is usual self, and we wouldn’t have him any other way. Matt is cool, calm and relaxed….yeah right! But Mason, I think he may have had a personality transplant!

There are some very emotional moments and some downright sad ones, I was right there with them in that room. Word of warning have tissues at the ready….

This story encompasses so many of my favourite characters and shows them at their best. I laughed with the family. I cried with the family. I breathed a sigh of relief with the family. And I congratulated with the family. I am a quiet observer of this family and I thank D. L. Roan for bringing them to us.

A new series will soon be in the making featuring the Sterling Family (Clay’s family) but I do feel that there will still be more to come from Falcon Ridge. For one thing we are missing Cory – Could there be a Detective McLendon series in the future? I wait with baited breath for what comes next.

With the investigation still in full flow, Scarlet struggles to protect her new relationship whilst still tracking the clues.  Will she be able to hold it all together or will the secrets become more than anyone can take?

REVIEW

I received this book as an ARC review and really enjoyed it.  The characters are interesting and the chemistry between all three is sizzling.  The story is well written and is full of twists and secrets.  Scarlet is a woman who has had a tumultuous past. From the time she lost her parents in a tragic accident she has kept her heart sealed so that she would never feel that sort of pain again. Michael is similar to Scarlet in the heart department, whereas Sam is still recovering from the loss of the woman he loved. It takes all three of them to overcome their fears of love but together they are strong.

This is the third book in the series and although I have not read the previous stories it did not detract from the enjoyment of this one.  The female characters from books 1 & 2 make an appearance in this one and I will definitely be reading these and probably more by this author in the future

This is a menagé a trois with MF and MFM sex scenes.

Double Dose by Katie Allen

Speech therapist Daphne Dahl lived an uncomplicated life, keeping herself to herself wherever possible, but all that changed when the attractive stranger kidnaps her.

Ari would do anything for his mute friend Benjy, even kidnapping. Bringing Daphne to their remote hideout in an effort to find out why he wont talk should have been simple enough, but the more time they spend together the more his feelings for her grow. He knows that Benjy also has feelings for this new woman in their lives.

Daphne knows she should be scared, should attempt to get away at every opportunity but something stops her.  Is it the growl that comes from Ari or the sparkle in Benjy’s eye, either way she knows that there is attraction for not just one but both of these men. When the reason for their confinement makes an unwelcome appearance, Daphne will do everything she can to protect her men.

REVIEW

Finding yourself in a remote log cabin with not one but two big, handsome men, who wouldn’t want to stay?  Ari and Benjy, along with three other men, escaped a testing lab where they were essentially lab rats given bionic powers.  Following the process Benjy stopped talking…enter Daphne. Daphne has always been a loner, since she advanced two year ahead at school. Finding out her fiancé didn’t really love her and left her after stealing all his clients money, she vowed never to get attached again.

The story is interesting although the bionic powers took some getting used too. I did feel that there could have been more made of the two different plot points, her fiancé and the lab people.  Everything just seemed to come to a rushed end.  I won’t deny though that the sex scenes are hot. If you enjoy a bit of menage then you will definitely like this.

This book is the fourth in this series which had all previously been published under another name.  This book can be enjoyed as a standalone and although we are introduced to the characters from the previous books it does not impact heavily on this story.

Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC

REVIEW

I will be completely honest and say that I did not expect to enjoy these books. I have never really taken much interest in the ‘Club scene’ type stories with hardcore Dom/sub, but these books did surprise me as they are not really hardcore at all. There are moments where I feel the women’s humiliation but the way they are written this doesn’t last long and feeds into the feelings between Dom and Sub well. Each male in their own story has a dominant side looking for his perfect sub but also looking for a life partner. None of them are 24/7 Doms.

There is also the suspense side of each story which detracts from the whole BDSM side.  The team is primarily a group of former military men who have a shared interest in BDSM. They are essentially one big happy family (ok, not always happy) but the bond between them is hard to break.  When the men find the woman they want there is nothing that will stop him from claiming her as his own and the women are more than happy to be claimed. As with all books of this type there is the moment when all seems lost – the alpha says something stupid, the woman does something stupid, or the bad guy gets past there defences, but I will say that so far each has had a HEA.  Something else that I enjoyed about these books is the continued presense  of the characters from the previous books and the ending of each leads onto the beginning of the next.

The scenes are fairly mild but gives a glimpse into the world of BDSM.  If you like this in a story then I think you will enjoy this series.  They have opened my mind up to reading other books along a similar line.

I will be reading more of this series in the future.
