One Day in December by Josie Silver

REVIEW

Beautifully heartbreaking and heartwarming all in one.

Jack and Laurie’s story is a bittersweet love-triangle that becomes a complicated friendship.  Laurie is in love with a mystery man who she sees waiting at a bus stop and spends the next 12 months searching for. When Sarah, Laurie’s best friend, brings home her new boyfriend who she is head-over heels in love with, new boyfriend turns out to be mystery man. Jack and Laurie both deny knowing each other and try to be friends for Sarah’s sake. Not an easy task when feelings are involved.

Laurie is a steadfast friend and although she may have slipped up a couple of times, her heart was always in the right place.  Her friendship with Sarah holds a bond as strong as sisterhood and woe betide anyone who tries to get between them.

Jack tries to do the right thing.  He loves Sarah but he also knows that Laurie holds a certain place in his heart as well.  As the years progress, new loves are found and lost, friendships are broken and mended, and Jack and Laurie seem to be forever in the wrong places, both emotionally and physically, at the wrong time.

A beautifully written story that will leave you wanting more, or at least it did me.  Jack and Laurie embedded themselves into my mind and I could almost feel their pain and heartache with every year that passed. If this book was missing anything it was an epilogue.  I’m a sucker for wanting that final bit of happiness, the glimpse into the future, the happily ever after of all the characters and where they are one, five or ten years on, but that’s just me.  This is a definite winter warmer, curl up on the sofa with a mug of tea, book that you wont want to put down.

Rating 5/5

Synopsis

Two people. Ten chances. One unforgettable love story.

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn’t exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there’s a moment of pure magic…and then her bus drives away.

Certain they’re fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn’t find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they “reunite” at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It’s Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.

What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.
