She Can Run – She Can… #1 by Melinda Leigh

Elizabeth Baker appeared to have it all…but appearances can be deceiving.   Widowed with two young children she thought she had found stability when she married Congressman Richard Baker, until the day she found out his secret.  A secret that he would kill for.

On the run and with nowhere to go, Elizabeth takes a job as caretaker to an estate in a small town in Pennsylvania but even that doesn’t go right.

Jack O’Malley has been forced into early retirement from the police force due to a knee injury, and to say he is not happy about it would be an understatement.  When his uncle dies and leaves him his estate he did not realise that it came with additions…Elizabeth and her two children.

With Elizabeth’s lack of trust and the fear that resounds around the children, Jack knows that something is not right but can he get Beth to trust him before she runs again?  Or will the threat track her down and take her away from him?

Great to have a book with slightly more mature main characters.  A lot of ‘romance’ novels focus on characters in their 20’s and early 30’s, so to have a story where the love interests are in their late 30’s/40’s is refreshing.

The story line is exciting and although I had the main bad guy worked out quite early on, there were enough twists and turns to make me wonder if it was right. My only real criticism about this book is that the ending happens to quickly.  You know that something else will happen to Beth but it is so close to the end of the book that it feels rushed.  It could have done with a little more suspense – will he/won’t he get to her on time?  And the bad guy could have been a little more menacing.  I would also liked to have known a little bit more about their life after (ok, maybe not my only criticism!).  I’m hoping that the characters will reappear in the following books so that we can keep up to date with them.

The second book is based on a character who is introduced in the first book – Chief of Police Mike O’Connell in ‘She Can Tell’

I love to Read! Mostly romance (of all types) but I also enjoy murder mysteries, paranormal fantasy, sci-fi, comedy, pretty much anything.
