When his distraught ex-wife calls after her eleven year old step-daughter is reported missing, Detective Mason Callahan takes leave from his job to help with the search. The FBI are called in and Special Agent Ava McLane is posted with the family as liaison.
When a confidential informant of Mason’s is also found murdered his life starts to unravel in ways he never dreamed possible.
As Mason and Ava spend more time together, living under the roof of Mason’s ex-wife and her husband, an attraction begins to grow out of the chaos. With time running out for little Henley the pair must put their feelings on hold and focus on the case at hand.
Gripping opening book to this series. Detective Callahan has appeared in other books by Kendra Elliot, which I will be reviewing as I re-read them. This is our first introduction to Special Agent McLane and I really liked her character. She has her share of shit to deal with, namely her twin sister, but with Mason by her side I think she can handle that situation. This is not an overly “romantic” book (but there is one sex scene), because that’s not really who Mason or Ava are, but their feelings are definitely real and I hope that in future books we see a lot more of how they react with each other.
