Eliza Havens works for and is best friends with Samantha Harrison, owner of Alliance.
Carter Billings is best friends with Blake Harrison and is soon to be the new Governor of California.
Eliza and Carter have flirted and argued with each other on the occasions that they have been at joint events but never let themselves get close due to the relationship with their best friends. When Carter ends up all over the media due to a bar fight where he was trying to protect Eliza and Lady Gwen (Blake’s sister), Eliza feels responsible and agrees to a press conference despite knowing what harm this could to her.
Eliza has a past that no one knows about, not even Sam, but with the publicity she is now getting it could threaten not only her safety but that of any one close to her. Should Eliza stay and face what may come or should she run, leaving those she loves, including Carter, behind?
More tension and suspense than the previous book which is good. It bought about a different feel rather than being a repeat of the first. I do enjoy books like these that bring in more and more characters as they go along who will become the main characters in future books.
Eliza is a very independent women as she has had to be growing up. Carter is enigmatic but with a touch of hometown charm. The two characters work really well together. The uncertainty that is present throughout the book of the reasons behind Carter’s proposal keeps the reading guessing (a little) but we all know there is going to be a happy ever after, it’s the getting there that is the fun part.
